The Gastein Valley - A hiker's paradise

Hiking does the body and soul good!

The pristine, unspoiled nature of Hohe Tauern National Park enchants everyone with its rugged, cascading waterfalls, gently gurgling mountain streams, high mountain lakes with fascinating flora and fauna, and last but not least, views of the many 3,000 m high peaks, and crystal-clear mountain air.
Here, hikers can take a deep, cleansing breath and enjoy the feeling of limitless freedom, quiet, and harmony. You can start wonderful half- or full-day hikes from right here at the VILLA ST. GEORG.

Awaiting you in Gastein are over 350 km of well signposted hiking trails - from walking paths to alpine trails.

From May to October, dozens of staffed alpine huts will entice you with homemade, farm-fresh products, mostly from organic producers. A stop for refreshments is always worthwhile, whether it's a delicious snack or a glass of elderberry juice. Most of the huts are located only halfway up the mountain and are easily reachable on a half-day hike.

There are several insider's tips for the more adventurous. From Gastein, you can reach millennia-old trade routes and Tauern crossings to neighboring mountain valleys: Rauris, Großarl, and even Carinthia (Mallnitz). "Korntauern" – the route from Böckstein to Mallnitz was already well-known by the Romans and was the shortest route from the north to the sea. Even to this day you can find remains of this over 5000 year old path, which was even actually paved in parts.
